In een Maorilegende wordt verteld dat hun Polynesische voorouders Nieuw-Zeeland bereikten door de rosse gruttoÂ´s op hun trektocht te volgen. In a single non-stop flight lasting nine days, the godwit covers a distance of 11,000 km from Alaska to New Zealand and the east coast of Australia. This is a record far outstripping that of the knot or the arctic tern, which make journeys of respectively 5400 and 18,000 km, with stops on the way. Godwits do it by burning up not only all their fat, but even parts of their intestines. They also exploit strong tailwinds. A legend told by the Maoris says that their ancestors reached New Zealand from Polynesia by following the migration of the bar-tailed godwit.
