La sua Signoria reverendissima mi rispose con parole molto amorevoli et dischorrendo molto saviamente si ingegnò persuadere con molte vive ragioni che nella excellentia del duca et nella sua Signoria per alcuno accidente che fusse intervenuto mai si era spento o diminuito lo amore el quale la casa sforzescha haveva portato alla città nostra. Et benché fussino successe alcune cose le quali havessino potuto dare qualche ombra alle Signorie vostre del contrario, non erano causate da mala intentione ma dalla colpa de’ tempi et dalli travagli delle cose di Italia: perché nelli stati maximamente è necessario in servire temporibus; et che la excellentia del duca poteva rendere di sé buono conto che tucte le actioni sue erono sempre state intrinsecus coniuncte con lo amore || che ha havuto continuamente in verso le Signorie vostre: il che manifestamente si comprobava per le opere presenti cum sit che hora li tempi haveano cominciato a variare et a mutare le conditioni: onde la sua illustrissima Signoria poteva più liberamente procurare quello cognosceva appartenersi al debito della nostra mutua benivolentia, la quale meritava più presto il nome di coniunctione. Et che essendoli el duca in luogho di padre per reverentia, benché fratello secundum carnem, sua reverendissima Signoria, etiam quando fusse d’altra volontà, è necessitata seguire in ogni cosa le sue vestigie; ma circa el beneficio delle Signorie vostre et circa el favorire le cose loro cacciava per natura et non credeva che altri lo superassi per affectione; et che, rischontrandosi la buona dispositione del duca con la sua, le Signorie vostre potevano essere certissime che né per l’uno né per l’altro si mancherebbe in alcuna cosa la quale cognoscessi^no^ potere cedere a benificio della città: chiamando in testimonio delle opere sue buone – da quel tempo in qua nel quale erano cessati di quelli rispecti che havevano indocto necessità – el Papa, lo oratore di Spagna et di Napoli et alcuni altri cardinali, e’ quali potevano fare pienissima fede di quanto sua Signoria haveva procurato in satisfactione delle vostre Signorie et perché quelle ritornino in possessione delle cose loro. Et harebbe facto molto più se non fusse stata la infirmità sua, ma che si sforzerebbe ristorare el tempo passato, confortando le Signorie vostre a sperare bene, perché, da chi teneva in mano in fuora, tucti li altri la intendevano a uno modo.
