The article reflects on the use of intravenous acyclovir (ACV) as the standard of care for treatment of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis (HSE). He informs that addition of oral ACV for 6 months following a intravenous course of 14-21 days of ACV had negative effect on cognitive function, based on a study J. W. Gnann and colleagues published within the issue. He mentions need to explore treatments to improve outcomes for patients with HSE such as addition of corticosteroids to ACV.
