Pilot union protests have helped stop LTU International Airways passenger jet operations into Kabul, Afghanistan. The pilot union in Germany and the affiliated International Federation of Airline Pilots Association (IFALPA) groups lobbied the German transport ministry to reverse itself earlier this year on allowing LTU passenger flights into Kabul. The carrier was able to operate only three Airbus A330 flights into the capital before the German ministry changed its mind, according to Lufthansa German Airlines Caption Georg Fongern, a principal officer with IFALPA on security issues. Fongern said the unions were concerned not just because of the man-portable air defense systems threat, but also because Luftwaffe officials in Kabul told pilot union representatives that if an aircraft crashed off the runway, no soldiers could respond quickly because of minefields.
