This article discusses findings of studies as to the role of sign language in helping children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DDH) communicate, referencing articles by Napoli et al, Fitzpatrick et al and Geers et al which appeared in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 issues of the journal "Pediatrics." Topics covered include congenital hearing loss, advances in technology and practice which benefited children who are DDH, such as newborn screening and cochlear implants, and the American Sign Language.
