Proclamation of the Union of Brest on the Bug (1596) caused a controversy in the political and social life of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a lasting testimony of which are the extensive Polish and Ruthenian polemical writings. Three parties of the religious conflict (Catholic, Uniate (Greek Catholic) and Orthodox) discussed, in the course of a dispute which lasted for over a century and a half, an extensive range of problems pertaining to own and foreign history, culture, writing and liturgical tradition. For religious writers, circumstances related to the appearance of Christianity in the area of Central Europe, especially along the Carpathian curve, which was the region where influences of the two main church traditions (Greek and Latin) clashed and inter-fused, were of special significance. Confirming the genesis of own denomination, conviction about its dogmatic and liturgical legitimacy and relations with the Balkan and Mediterranean late-antique church tradition formed a major factor that contributed to the building of the Ruthenian identity - the Orthodox believers ("Greek faith"). In the atmosphere of controversy that accompanied the effects of conclusion of the Union of Brest, the struggle for the status of the "Greek faith" acquired the characteristics of not only a religious dispute, but also a political and cultural one. The presentation tackles the main subject matter of the polemics against the backdrop of events from the history of the state and the church of the Republic of Poland in the 17th - 18th century.
