Why North Is Up: Map Conventions and Where They Came From, by Mick Ashworth.: Oxford: Oxford University, Bodleian Library Publishing, 2019. A significant earlier example is not mentioned, J.-F.-W. von Charpentier's 1778 lithological map of Saxony, with a key including labelled coloured rectangles that identify the area colours for eight rock types. This small book (23 × 18 cm) has attractive features typical of larger coffee-table style books: a decorative hard cover and 106 mostly full and double-page map illustrations occupying nearly half of its 224 pages.
