The article presents a study which reported complete three-dimensional (3D) structures of the Lon protease from Meiothermus taiwanensis (MtaLon), in two substrate-bound states, determined to 2.4-Å resolution by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Topics discussed include the assembly of interlocked helix triangle on the top of the hexameric core, implication of the tensegrity helix triangle on the assembly process, and a triangular platform for substrate binding, selection, and unfolding.
