Rwanda's ruling party, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), has chosen President Paul Kagame as its candidate for the upcoming July election. This decision is widely expected to result in Kagame's re-election for a fourth seven-year term. The 66-year-old president has been in power since 2003 and has consistently won elections with over 90% of the vote. The only known challenger to Kagame is Frank Habineza, the leader of the opposition Green Party, who received only 0.45% of the vote in the 2017 election. Other potential challengers have been blocked from running due to past convictions. The election will also include the selection of women MPs, youth representatives, and a representative for disabled Rwandans. While Rwanda is considered one of the most stable countries in Africa, rights groups accuse Kagame of ruling in a climate of fear that suppresses dissent and free speech. [Extracted from the article]
