When a symmetrical diblock copolymer of poly(styrene)-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) is densely hydrogen-bonded with wedge-like nonmesogens of 4â²-(3,4,5-trioctyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoic acid (TOB), the supramolecular complex thus formed can self-assemble into a hierarchical structure of tetragonal perforation layers (TPL) within ordered hexagonal columnar liquid-crystalline phase (Colho).
