The article discusses scholarly controversy about the degree to which California's Hollywood motion picture industry colluded with the Nazis before World War II against Jews, sparked by the books "The Collaboration: Hollywood's Pact With Hitler" by Ben Urwand and "Hollywood and Hitler: 1933-1939" by Thomas Doherty. The author looks at Urwand's argument that film studios were collaborating with Nazi officials, in particular Georg Gyssling, to promote an American suspicion of Jews for profit, the role of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) motion picture company in funding the Nazis, as well as the Motion Picture Production Code set in the 1930s. Also examined is the representation of Jews in films.
