Research into youth violence and racism around 1989 / 90 has drawn primarily on sources of the MfS, police files, oral history interviews, and press coverage. This paper presents the Saxonian Longitudinal Study (SLS), a panel survey that began in the GDR in 1987 and is ongoing. It discusses the potential of secondary analysis to explore the relationship between transformation, racism, and nationalism in the longue durée of 1989 / 90. Social science data can be used to write a history of everyday racism during the upheaval and transformation in East Germany. The limits and possibilities of this history will be discussed in order to show that studies that did not focus on racism can assist when inquiring into the opinions and attitudes of the supposed political center.
