Synthesis, Characterization and Disinfection Efficiency Evaluation of Quaternary Ammonium Iodide Derivatives of Gum Arabic.

An effective, polysaccharide-based water-soluble disinfectant was produced by chemically modifying gum arabic (GA) through various substitution reactions. This food-grade and non-toxic plant polysaccharide was subjected to tosylation, azidation and reduction to substitute the hydroxyl functionality with amino groups via the formation of tosyl and azide derivatives of GA. The reactions were followed by C, H, N and S analysis, FT-IR, 1 H- and 13 C-NMR spectroscopy. The degrees of substitution in the prepared gum derivatives, DS Tos (= 1.02), DS Azi (= 0.97) and DS Ami (= 0.77) were calculated from the elemental compositions. The amino-functionalized gum was quaternized with different amounts of iodomethane to produce polycationic GA derivatives with degrees of quaternization (DQ) calculated to be 35.2 and 58.3%. The N-trimethyl ammonium iodide derivatives of GA (QrGA) showed significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. The minimum inhibitory concentration values of QrGA derivatives varied with bacterial species and decreased as DQ increased. The disinfection efficiency of the produced quaternized gum derivatives was also evaluated by determining the Riedeal-Walker phenol coefficient that was found to be higher than unity (1.4–1.6) indicating a good bactericidal efficacy. The developed quaternary ammonium iodide derivative of gum arabic has the potential to be used as an effective disinfectant in aqueous medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
