A study conducted by researchers at Al-Azhar University compared the outcomes of two surgical techniques, canal wall up (CWU) and canal wall down (CWD) mastoidectomy, in patients with cholesteatoma. The study involved 86 adult patients and found that both techniques resulted in improved hearing, but CWU had better hearing improvement compared to CWD. However, CWD showed better outcomes in terms of preventing the recurrence of cholesteatoma. The study highlights the complexity of cholesteatoma and the lack of consensus among experts in the field.
