The article presents a definition of the term ARCHILOCHIAN. The Gr. lyric poet Archilochus of Paros (fl. mid. 7th c. B.C.) drew on earlier verseforms, esp. dactylic and iambic cola, to create a number of complex systems (asynarteta and epodes [qq.v.]), i.e. lines in which different metrical cola are combined. Scholars define the A. line variously: (a) xDx + ithyphallic: ( x - ⌣ ⌣ - ⌣ ⌣ - x | - ∣ - ⌣ - - ), where D = hemiepes (q.v.); (b) dactylic tetrameter + ithyphallic ( - ⌣ ⌣ - ⌣ ⌣ - ⌣ ⌣ - ⌣ ⌣ | - ∣ - ⌣ - - ) (so Halporn et al.; = Klingner's versus Archilochius); (c) dactylic tetrameter catalectic ( - ⌣ ⌣ - ⌣ ⌣ - ⌣ ⌣ - -; so Klingner).
