The article focuses on the SmartGridCity project by Xcel Energy. It states that in May 2008, Xcel Energy proclaimed that it had started the test phase of its SmartGridCity project in Boulder, Colorado, and as part of the project, Xcel will install over 15,000 "smart meters" in residential and commercial sites. The said meters will give Xcel real-time information about energy demand, helping it maximize delivery and prevent service interruptions. Moreover, customers will be able to monitor their energy use through a Web site. They will also be able to select whether they want to obtain power from the region's wind and solar farms, or buy it from whatever source is cheapest.
