The article reports on the genetically engineered viruses used to build electrodes for lithium-ion batteries by materials scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It states that amorphous iron phosphate was grown in the surfaces of these viruses and was bonded with carbon nanotubes. It states that the formed nanoscale structure from viruses were comparable to the electrodes in highly manufactured lithium-ion batteries in terms of charge and discharge rates.
