The article focuses on Michael Mack, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the chain restaurant company Garden Fresh. Mack's founding of the company, his dismissal by its board of directors in 1991, and his subsequent rehiring as CEO and resulting growth of the corporation are described. Mack states that prior to his dismissal, he had several of the flaws often attributed to holders of masters of business administration degrees. A board member who was among those who voted to dismiss Mack notes he had had no experience in the restaurant industry. Mack expresses his belief that his period of unemployment following his dismissal led to changes in his management style responsible for his rehiring and subsequent success.
