The effect of overweight and sports on the psychosocial health of children. In this article the relation between weight and psychological health of 5-6 year old children and adolescents (13-14 years) is described and the relations with the frequency of sport. Data are gathered during routine preventive health assessments performed by community physicians and nurses working in preventive Child Healthcare services. On basis on length and weight data the Body Mass Index is calculated. The LSPPK and the KIVPA are used to measure psychosocial health. The frequency of sports is asked during the health assessment. The population consists of 10,722 children in the province of Utrecht. No relations are found between weight and psychosocial health for the 5-6 year old children. Only for 13-14 year old boys, obesity is related to psychosocial health. A significant relation between the frequency of sports and psychosocial health is found. A higher frequency of sports reduces the chance of psychosocial problems. Several initiatives to stimulate sports for children are recommended. More research is necessary to get more information about the reasons why overweight children are less active in sports and longitudinal studies are necessary to the relation between psychosocial health and sports.
