First quarter showed a moderate decline in North American consumer demand for major appliances, and what's bothering producers is that the appliance market isn't showing a sales-mix shift to lower-priced products. If the trend continues, it could short-circuit the industry's production plans, which are geared to 2% sales growth, and orphan such production materials as steel, ceramics and plastics. Philips Electronics will reduce complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) capacity by about 20% by closing two chip fabrication operations in the U.S. in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and in San Antonio, Texas. There's plenty of cheap sheet steel available although costs of raw materials are surging. Corrugated box demand from manufacturing is soft.
