Aim. This study explored the validity and reliability of the Greek version of two behavioural pain scales, Payen 2001 and Puntillo 1997, in critical care patients. Method. The Payen 2001 and Puntillo 1997 pain scales were translated, back-translated and validated by an expert panel. A convenience sample consisting of 61 critically ill patients (25 patients with coronary disease and 36 intubated critically ill patients with diverse diagnoses) was followed for at least 3 days. Validity was explored through associations with the numeric visual analogue scale (VAS), which was administered to both patients, when able to self-report pain, and nurses. Test-retest reliability and inter-rater reliability were assessed using a convenience sample of 10 intensive care unit (lCU) nurses. Results. In both patient groups, a strong positive correlation was detected between the nurses' ratings on the Puntillo 1997 scale and the VAS ratings of both the patients (r=0.6-0.92, p<0.002), and the nurses (r=0.57-0.66, p<0.003), and a consistent association was observed with nurses' ratings on the Payen 2001 scale (r=0.57-0.85, p<0.004).ln coronary care patients, there was also a strong positive association between the Payen scale score and the patients'VAS ratings (r=0.67, p<0.0001). Test-retest reliability (r=0.93) and inter-rater reliability (r=0.81, McNemar test p>0.1) were adequate. Conclusions. Behavioural pain scales may be useful tools for pain assessment in critical care patients. The Greek versions of the two tools tested appears to be reliable and valid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
