An essay is presented which explores Junot Diaz's novel "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" through the theoretical perspective of sociolinguistics. The essay notes that in the novel, Spanish was seamlessly written and placed on equal footing with English, that Spanish was not prominent and neither was English, and that when read without emphasis on complete understanding, the novel not only mimicked the experience of being "other," but turned the experience on the people who perpetuated it.
