The sugar year 2017 in the Czech Republic can be seen as two separate areas -- one in Bohemia with nearly optimal weather conditions during the whole sugar beet vegetation period and one in Moravia with less favorable weather conditions, which reflected in a significantly lower sugar content (16.67% versus 18.24%). Annual rain fall in the territory of the Czech Re public was 100% of the longterm ave rage, i.e. 683 mm. The month of August, however, was quite unique as it was dry (85% of standard) and warm (+1.5 °C as compared to standard) in the whole territory. The average annual air temperature deviation from the longterm average in the territory of the Czech Republic reached + 0.7 °C, which classifies this year among the socalled "hot years". During the harvest, the conditions varied significantly, not only in the individual regions but also in each sugar factory area. The 2017/2018 campaign took place in seven Czech sugar factories, from 6 Sep tember 2017 to 28 February 2018, i.e. 144 days. The shortest campaign took 81.7 days, the longest took 138.0 days. The average length of a campaign per factory is thus 122 days. The total amount of standardquality sugar beet (16 % sugar content) from the CR processed into sugar reached 5.037 mil tons; the beet was harvested from 67 485 ha. The average weighted sugar content of the purchased sugar beet was 17.62% (16.72% to 18.24%). Out of the total amount of sugar beet, 57% was processed in Bohemia and 43% in Moravia. The total of 646.9 thousand tons of white sugar, including 10.9 thousand tons of sugar for other states, and 192.4 thou sand tons of molasses, including the socalled last syrup intended for fer menta tion processes were produced in the Czech Republic.
