A study conducted by researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine explores the association between neighborhood disadvantage (ND) and aggressive breast cancer (BCa) tumor biology. The study examines both objective (geospatial) and subjective (perceived) measures of ND and their impact on BCa recurrence-free survival (RFS). The findings suggest that ND is associated with shorter RFS, independent of individual, tumor, and treatment characteristics, indicating potential biological mechanisms by which ND influences RFS. The study also identifies transcription factors (TFs) associated with aggressive tumor biology and sympathetic nervous system activation, which correlate with worse clinical outcomes. However, further validation in a national cohort is needed. [Extracted from the article]
