The article focuses on the concerns expressed on the planned acquisition and purchase of the short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing version (STOVL) of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) by the U.S. Navy, Air Force and Marines. It details the three variants of the JSF program. Navy tactical-aviation planners have argued that the Marines should drop the acquisition of F-35B in favor of the F-35C at least for carrier-based units. The Navy intends to purchase 360 F-35Cs and 320 F-35Bs.
