The electrostatic force of repulsion between two charged solid surfaces, and acting normally between them, has been determined by direct measurement. Simultaneously the thickness of the aqueous film between the surfaces was measured optically using an interference method. One solid surface was an optically polished glass prism and the other an optically smooth spherical cap of transparent poly(-isoprene) rubber. The charges on the surfaces were effected by the use of anionic surface active agents which formed adsorbed layers on the surfaces. Both sodium dodecyl sulphate and sodium hexadecyltrioxyethylene glycol sulphate were used. The ionic strength of the solution was varied by the addition of sodium chloride. The experimental results were compared with those expected theoretically for interaction between two diffuse electrical double layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
