It was probably inevitable that the trend toward endoscopically guided and similar methods utilizing smaller skin incisions, and offering the opportunity for faster healing times, would include decompression of the median nerve for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)that is unresponsive to conservative care. The interest in endoscopic methods for carpal tunnel release (CTR) has been motivated by the desire to minimize or eliminate the need for potentially tender and troublesome incisions in the palmar skin.In 1989 Okutsu and colleagues reported a technique they originated for performing carpal tunnel releases.
