This study was carried out to characterize botanical-, molecular-, agronomical- and chemically several Chaya cultivars (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius) commonly found in Guatemala. Germoplasm was collected through out Guatemala and the botanical description of the wild Chaya species and the 4 semidomesticated groups (`Estrella', 'Mansa', 'Plegada' y 'Picuda' ) was performed. The germoplasm was planted as a living collection in the Ag Experimental Station of Universidad del Valle de Guatemala in the South coast. Thereafter, 2 field trials with selected Chaya accesions were established in the Pacific coast. A genetic similitude of about 25 - 35 % among Chaya cultivars was determined, and apparently the domesticated Chaya cultivars evolved from the wild specie. The genetic similitude among accessions (samples) within each Chaya group was about 50 - 60 %. The 4 semidomesticated cultivars were identified as Cnidoscolus aconitifolius ssp. aconitifolius; whereas the wild specie was classified as Cnidoscolus sp. (probably C. multilobus ssp. multilobus). Significative difference (p<0.05) among sites and Chaya cultivars was found for dry leaf (without petiole) biomass ('Picuda' (6.1 t/ha) > 'Estrella' (5.71/ha) > 'Plegada' (5.3 t/ha) > 'Mansa' (3.6 t/ha). The insect Corythucha sp, the fungus Puccinia sp. and the mite Tetranychus urticae were found at a pest level in the different Chaya cultivars. All of the Chaya cultivars presented a high protein, ash, fat and mineral content. The average chemical composition of the Chaya cultivars was, (%): ash 9.2, protein 31 .2, fat 7.9, leaf moisture 78; (mg /100 g): HCN 34.7, Fe 21.5, Mn 4.3, Ca 880, Zn 7.2, Cu 1.3 y Mg 484. The fat acid profile (miristic, palmitic, esteric, oleic, linoleic y linolenic acids) of the 'Estrella', 'Mansa' y 'Picuda' cultivars was also determined, and some differences among cultivars were observed. Taking into consideration the mad hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition problems that affect several population segments in the rural area of Guatemala, as well as the potential of the Chaya leaves, that plant might be considered as a good option for human food and animal feed.
