The article focuses on the port city of Cherbourg, France, which became the center of activism by the French labor union confederation Confédération générale du travail (CGT) during the early 1900s and discusses the efforts of unionists such as the leader of the construction workers' union Alexandre Burnouf. It examines the first series of the periodical "L'Avenir de la Manche" published jointly by CGT and the French socialist political party Section française de l’Internationale ouvrière (SFIO) from August 1910 to March 1915. The spread and success of mass unionization from the naval arsenal to the construction industry, its involvement in social conflicts, and its impact on labor in the city's harbor are discussed.
