We report an improved synthesis of α,β-unsaturated imides, a class of compounds that has been identified as broadly useful in (salen)aluminum-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate addition reactions. An efficient, scaleable procedure for the synthesis of phosphonate imide reagent 4 is described, as well as a DBU-mediated Horner&bond; Wadsworth&bond;Emmons reaction that affords the target compounds in high yield and (E)-selectivity and with good functional group tolerance.
