tritional monitoring in the ICU has two components: monitoring the status of the lean body mass (i.e., the presence and severity of malnutrition) and monitoring the nutritional response to the nutrition/metabolic support used. An understanding of the rationale underlying these phenomenon and the treatment and monitoring regimens necessitates a discussion of the effects of starvation and of the metabolic response on the lean body mass and its distribution (i.e., on the body nitrogen economy).
