We hypothesized that treatment differences in blood metabolites are affected by sampling time relative to supplementation. Yearling beef heifers (409 ± 35 kg; n = 39) were allocated by BW and BCS to receive; 1) no supplementation (CON); 2) low-fat dried distillers grains (LDG); 3) high-fat dried distillers grains (HDG); or 4) cottonseed meal (CSM). Supplements were fed to achieve similar CP intake (LDG: 0.7%, HDG: 0.8%, and CSM: 0.4% BW). Heifers were individually supplemented at 0800 and fed ad libitum hay (8.65% CP, 66.3% NDF) at 0900 and 1600. On d 26 of supplementation, blood was collected from 3 heifers per treatment at -2, 2, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 h post-supplementation. Data were analyzed with treatment, hour, and their interaction in the model; hour was a repeated measure. The treatment x hour interaction affected (P≤ 0.01) BUN and NEFA and tended (P= 0.06) to affect glucose. At all hours, BUN was greater (P< 0.01) for heifers from supplemented treatments than CON, and from 6 to 14 h post-supplementation CSM had greater (P≤ 0.03) BUN than HDG and LDG. At -2 h, CSM had greater (P≤ 0.05) NEFA than HDG and LDG. Control heifers had greater (P≤ 0.03) NEFA than HDG and LDG at 2 and 10 h, greater (P≤ 0.02) NEFA than supplemented heifers at 6 and 8 h, and greater (P≤ 0.05) NEFA at 12 and 14 h than LDG. Heifers fed HDG had greater (P≤ 0.02) glucose than CON and LDG at 2 h and greater (P< 0.01) glucose than CON at 14 h. At 8 h, CSM and LDG had greater (P≤ 0.05) glucose than CON. In conclusion, sampling time affects interpretation of blood metabolite treatment differences in supplementation studies.
