Early Carolingian skeletal remains from Zullestein (District Bergstrasse) were examined anthropologically and sketches were drawn of those skulls which were well preserved. The material consisted of the remains of at least 19 adults of both sexes and 4 children or adolescents. On the basis of the morphological characteristics of the skull, the specimens were found to be very similar to the average "Reihengräbertypuss", but indicated only a partial conformity with other contemporary series of Southern Germany. Judging from our previous knowledge of the material, we are not concerned with a fully homogeneous population in Southern Germany during the early Middle Ages. Compared to the present population of middle Europe, the Zullestein population indicates, on the average, a medium to tall stature. On the basis of the typological evaluation of the long bones of the extremities, the men were found to be predominately leptosome-athletic or pyknic-athletic and the women always to be leptosome. There was an extraordinarily high incidence of pathological developments such as spondylosis deformans, spondylarthritis ankylopoetica, degenerative arthritis, exostosis, periostitis, caries, periodontal disease and periapical osteitis.
