Adequate sample collection leading to a definite diagnosis was achieved by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd pass in 45%, 72% and 79% of procedures using the EchoTip® ProCoreTM needle and 45%, 62% and 62% procedures using the EchoTip® needle (p 0.78, 0.5 and 0.18 respectively). A definite diagnosis using cell-block was achieved in 24 (83%) procedures. A suspicious diagnosis of malignancy using cell-block was achieved in an additional 4 patients increasing the diagnostic yield of cell block to 97%. There were no late complications( 7 days). Six of 26 (23%) patients with a pancreatic mass underwent successful pancreaticoduodenectomy confirming the diagnosis of malignancy. Conclusions: The newly developed EchoTip® ProCoreTM needle is safe and technically feasible for EUS-FNA of solid mass lesions. Preliminary results suggest that the EchoTip® ProCoreTM needle has a diagnostic yield similar to the EchoTip® needle and does not significantly reduce the number of needle passes required. Further studies are needed to determine if the increased cost of the EchoTip® ProCoreTM needle is warranted.
