— Low-Δnd SBE displays are optimized for brightness using LCD optics software. These low-Δnd (about 0.5 to 0.6 μm) SBE displays, or optical-mode interference (OMI) displays, have the inherent qualities of large cell-gap tolerances and low coloration without an additional film compensator. The 270° OMI display was found to produce the largest off-state brightness, greatly improved over current OMI displays. The 270° OMI display was also found to have the best off-axis viewing angle with respect to chromaticity changes and contrast ratio. Single-pixel devices with various twist angles verified the optimization. An optimized 270°-twist OMI device, which shows no striped texture, was constructed by using the polymer-stabilization technique with a rubbed standard polyimide. The data from the 270° OMI single-pixel device demonstrate the steepest threshold on the electro-optic curves.
