Presented are a series of advanced traveling-wave tubes (TWT's) for direct TV-broadcasting satellites. Operating in the 11.7 to 12.5-GHz frequency range, they are designed to deliver 100 to 120 watts, 150 watts and 200 to 230 watts of output power, respectively. By equipping them with a multistage direct-radiating collector, overall efficiency exceeding 50 % has been achieved. Detailed are the main technologies relied upon in the design of these TWT's, including the brazed-helix slow-wave structure and the direct radiating collector, with its pyrolyticgraphite electrodes. A detailed picture of the test results to date will also be given, along with a scheme for operating these tubes in parallel, where necessary.
