1. 1. The freshwater fish Barbus meridionalis were screened for electrophoretic variants of five enzymic systems. The tissue specificity of these enzymes were also studied. Some of the enzymes are encoded by duplicate loci. 2. 2. Seven electrophoretic bands of esterolytic activity were observed in liver extracts. 3. 3. Esterases were classified by employing different substrates and inhibitors. 4. 4. Lactate dehydrogenase is probably encoded by six loci. One of the LDH loci is polymorphic in a Greek natural population.
