Changes in adenine nucleotide (ATP) and in enzyme activities (urease, phosphatase, arylsulfatase, s‐glucosidase, dehydrogenase, benzoyl‐argininamide (BAA) protease, and casein protease) were investigated in a microcosm consisting of soil enclosed in a controlled chamber with high levels of SO2 (429 kg/ha/year). After 40 days of incubation, sampling was done on the untreated soil (US), on the exposed surface (EXS), on the unexposed surface in a petri dish (UXS), and on 1‐cm‐deep subsurface soil (SS) with an exposed surface. The values of all biochemical parameters measured at the end of incubation showed a 20–40% decrease in the surface samples compared to unexposed samples except for urease and arylsulfatase enzyme activities. Significant differences and high positive correlations in ATP, dehydrogenase, and casein protease were found between the EXS, SS, and UXS soil samples.
