Some student involvement in research is common at most colleges and universities; this paper discusses research which is student "powered." Active participa tion and responsibility as "staff" within a "real" research project are the characteristics distinguishing student-powered research. When the research is powered by students, the dy namics, the substantive results and the nature of the relationships of participants tend to differ from the processes, results, and relationships from student-aided or independent research efforts. Differences tend to be both quantitative and qualitative. For instance, student powered projects tend to involve all individuals enrolled in a given course, and their participation, particularly during data collection and processing, may permit a large-scale research project to be undertaken. However, the involvement of a greater number of people in con ceptualization and design processes will require substan tial compromise and negotiation, which may be ex pected to have an impact on interpersonal relationships as well as the substance of a survey instrument or inter view schedule. There are several conditions that are necessary for student-powered research projects to be initiated. There must be some impetus for launching a research project for which students specifically are to be key par ticipants. More often than not, such an impetus is pro vided by a faculty sponsor. The project must be possible from the standpoint of logistics. Research activities must be carefully scheduled to ensure that the tasks undertaken can be completed. There must be funding to
