This paper explains the convergence of ESM sensors and passive covert radar (PCR) by presenting the results of field tests with the application of an experimental wideband digital ESM receiver as a sensor in bistatic configuration for PCR. Exploitation of an a priori unknown radar illumination gives the principal possibility of detecting moving targets. A LPI radar with FMCW signals is used as the illuminating source in the field tests. Various high-speed tank ammunitions are the investigated targets. The interception and analysis of the signal source as the ESM task, the problems arising from the non-synchronized operation of source and receiver and the derived adaptive signal processing for target detection as the PCR task are shown.
