The single crystal elastic constants of three Cu 2 + x Mn 1− x Al alloys ( x = 0.8,0.7 and 0.6) of the metastable pseudobinary system Cu 2 MnAl-Cu 3 Al have been measured from room temperature down to liquid nitrogen temperature. A softening of the shear constant C′ = (C 11 −C 12 ) 2 and a very high value of the anisotropy ratio A = 2C 44 (C 11 -C 12 ) are observed in all alloys. In two slowly cooled specimens ( x = 0.7 and 0.6), the shear constant C 44 was also found to soften with decreasing temperature, with a steep drop at about −80°C. An electron microscopic investigation of the microstructure showed the existence of omega phase precipitates in all alloys at room temperature. This omega phase is probably ordered. It would inherit its ordered structure from the DO 3 type ordered structure of the matrix. A low temperature experiment has shown that the anomaly of C 44 is associated with the formation of another metastable phase at about −80°C in the two slowly cooled specimens with x = 0.7 and 0.6.
