Presented here is a two-layered ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter with a notched passband and suppressed stopband. The fundamental structure of the filter is aligned on layer-coupled microstrip-to-coplanar waveguide (CPW) technology. The bottom layer has a multiple-mode resonator (MMR) inside a CPW, and the upper layer has two microstrip lines separated by some distance. The MMR is optimized in dimension to place its initial resonant modes within the UWB spectrum and the tight coupling of the transition develops the UWB passband. Later, modified complimentary split ring resonator (MCSRR)-shaped defected ground structure (DGS) etched in the CPW develops the passband notch, whereas double U (DU) DGS units under the feeding lines provide suppressed stopband. The prototype proposed is essentially small in size capturing only 25.26 mm × 11.01 mm.
