As part of the ‘Long Way Up!’ (www.longwayup.org) this paper presents a comfort survey that was conducted across a variety of riders within the Derbyshire Advanced Motorcyclists Club and also at the University of Nottingham. The survey was based on a Body Part Discomfort questionnaire incorporating a 5-point scale of discomfort that was completed after various rides. Personal data and ride details were collected, as well as additional information about the perceived causes of discomfort and anything riders did to alleviate symptoms. The findings illustrate that specific areas of the body (e.g. wrists, arms and neck) seemed to suffer the most discomfort. Correlation analyses conducted on the age and height of riders against reported discomfort and an ANOVA conducted for different motorcycle designs against reported discomfort did not show any significant effects. The findings from this survey set a basis for comparison of other riders in the future and highlight areas that require further investigation. One of the aims of the survey was to test the assessment method prior to using it on the ‘Long Way Up!’ and this is also considered in the paper.
