The first account of infectious laryngotracheitis, ILT, as a separate disease entity was written by May and Tittsler (1925) (97) who described an outbreak on a farm in Rhode Island in 1923. Many of the early workers (6,69,89), however, pointed out that the disease had probably existed in poultry in North America for some years before 1925. Outbreaks occurring in California in 1924 were reported by Beach(6), who called the disease "infectious bronchitis." Gwatkin (66) recognized the existence of ILT in Canada in 1925, and the disease was reported in Holland by van Heelsbergen (129) in 1929. The disease was identified in Germany in 1932 (41), in Great Britain by Dobson (39) in 1935, in Australia by Seddon and Hart (118) in the same year, in Sweden by Magnusson (95) in 1940, and in Poland by Marek (96) in 1948. Beaudette (13) first showed that the disease was caused by a filtrable virus.
