The use of stainless steel scrap to remove protective coatings from spent fuel rods by pyrolysis in a process designed to recover the solid wastes for reuse was investigated. Treatment of the graphite--SiC coating on the microrods using a stainless steel melt results in chrome--nickel cast irons melting at 1250 to 1300/sup 0/C. This iron is separated from the fuel core (UO/sub 2/ or Th--UO/sub 2/ mixtures) by standard methods. The temperature and concentration relations for properties such as viscosity, wetting, and evaporation controlling the separation of the liquid and solid phases are given. (JRD)
