Magnetic nanoparticles are offering great potentials in a variety of applications in their bare form or coated with a surface coating and functional groups chosen for specific uses. Herein, cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with a multi-functional surface have been designed for copper(II) removal, while the same platform has been evaluated as a dual-modality MRI/PET agent. Firstly, cobalt ferrite nanoparticles coated with a double layer of octadecylamine (ODA) were solvothermally prepared, in accordance with our previous experience. These primary MNPs@ODA nanoparticles were characterized structurally with XRD, TEM and SEM-EDX and magnetically with VSM. Their organic coating was studied using FT-IR spectroscopy and TG analysis, and the presence of free amino groups on the surface was verified using the colorimetric ninhydrin test analysis. Two different copper complexes with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) as ligand, an acyclic multidentate complexone chelator, were prepared and loaded on the MNPs. The Cu(H3-DTPA) complex was covalently bound to the MNPs by formation of an amide bond between the complexs carboxylate groups and the free amine groups of ODA. The Cux(DTPA)y complex was immobilized on the surface by encapsulation with polyethyleneimine (PEI) polymer. The functionalized MNPs were characterized with FT-IR, VSM while the copper amount was estimated by SEM-EDX. The primary MNPs@ODA were also functionalized by three different ways with the hydrophilic organic molecules DTPA and PEI: i) DTPA was covalently bound to the free amino groups of ODA through the formation of an amide bond ii) PEI was used as an intermediate linker and iii) DTPA was covalently bound to the free amino groups of PEI through the formation of an amide bond. The modified MNPs were characterized with FT-IR, TGA, DLS, VSM, ninhydrin test while the surface charge (-potential) was measured. Comparative UV-Vis studies for removing copper(II) from aqueous solutions were conducted and the effect of time on the adsorption was also analyzed. Owing to the high magnetization of the MNPs the metal-loaded nanoadsorbents could be quickly removed from the aqueous solutions by magnetic separation and regenerated easily by acid treatment. Overall findings propose that these novel recyclable nanostructures present great potential in removing copper ions from aqueous solutions, while the possibility to radiolabel the complexes with a suitable isotope (64Cu) gives to the complex-functionalized MNPs the ability to behave as bimodal agents.
