Chamber tests were undertaken to rank twelve paints comprising alkyd gloss, non-drip, high solids undercoat and several emulsion and other water-based materials, on the basis of their total VOC emission rates and the chemical composition of the VOC mixture. Paint film thickness, airflow rate and the type of substrate were found to affect the measurement of the emission rate. A satisfactory comparison of the Texanol (2,2,4-frimethyl-1,3-pentanediol mono-isobutyrate) rate of emission and that of the total VOC was obtained when the paints were applied by a bar applicator and the use of different types of chamber.
