Several properties of a Xe toroidal electrodeless discharge as an intense flash-light source for photo-chemical and laser applications are studied. Spectral energy distributions are studied in the pressure range from 6 to 0.02 Torr. The numerical values of luminous flux, radian flux and efficiency are estimated roughly. The spectral energy distribution changes essentially in the pressure range from 1.5 to 1 Torr. At pressures above about 2 Torr, the emission spectra are mainly composed of the continuum and the XeI spectrum. At a pressure of 0.1 Torr, only lines of XeII and XeIII are found. The direct excitation process seems to be predominant and p-states are excited favorably in these toroidal discharges. They may be regarded as advantageous for active materials of the so-called gaseous ion lasers.
