A “NEW” allotypic gene has been revealed on iso-immunization of eighteen rabbits with a single rabbit's serum during an attempt to produce anti-IgG allotypic antibodies (reviewed in ref. 1). The animals received fifteen intravenous injections, each consisting of 1 ml. of serum, biweekly (three courses of five injections, the first and second course followed by a month interval), and were bled a week after the last injection. None of the recipients formed iso-precipitins to rabbit IgG allotypic determinants, but one of them (rabbit No. 21) responded by producing anti-allotypic antibodies against rabbit serum β-lipoprotein. This antibody reacted well by double immunodiffusion test in agar-gel and by immunoelectrophoresis (see Fig, 1) using whole rabbit serum or the isolated fraction2,3 of β-lipoprotein as antigen. The electrophoretic mobility of purified β-lipoprotein fractions differed according to the protein concentration in the sample4. In addition, the precipitin lines stained positively for lipid.
