O conceito de Manufatura Integrada por Computador (CIM) surgiu e comecou a ser discutido no seculo passado, ainda na decada de 1970. Este trabalho tras os conceitos iniciais da CIM, mostrando quais eram as expectativas com sua implantacao nas industrias de manufatura. Atraves de uma pesquisa bibliografica detalhada, baseada numa analise bibliometrica, buscou-se verificar quando foi o auge das pesquisas e publicacoes a respeito deste tema e como se deu sua evolucao. Por fim, sao apresentadas as tendencias futuras para as tecnologias de chao de fabrica que permitem a integracao das informacoes em todos os departamentos da empresa.
